Paiton, September 4. The Postgraduate Program of Universitas Nurul Jadid (UNUJA) Paiton held a training titled “Transforming Qualitative Research: Advanced Techniques Using NVivo and VOSviewer,” attended by UNUJA lecturers and several selected students. This training is designed to introduce advanced techniques in qualitative research by utilizing the NVivo and VOSviewer software, which is popular among global researchers.
This training was organized in response to the increasing demands of the academic world for the ability to analyze qualitative data in a more systematic manner. With the presence of software like NVivo and VOSviewer, researchers can more easily manage, classify, and categorize complex data, as well as present analysis results in a visual format that is easier to understand. Through this activity, UNUJA hopes that participants, especially lecturers, can enhance the validity of their research results and accelerate the data analysis process in their ongoing research projects.
The event was opened with a speech from the Vice Rector III of UNUJA, Dr. H. Hasan Baharun, M.Pd., who expressed his appreciation for the organization of this training. In his speech, Dr. Hasan Baharun emphasized that qualitative research plays a vital role in the development of knowledge, especially in fields related to education and management. “We hope that with this training, lecturers and students can feel more confident in using qualitative research methods supported by modern software, so that their research results can contribute more to the advancement of knowledge,” Dr. Hasan stated.
Additionally, the Director of the Postgraduate Program at UNUJA, Dr. H. Akmal Mundiri, M.Pd., stressed the importance of this training for UNUJA lecturers. He added that this activity is expected to have a direct impact on enriching the research capacity of lecturers, which will ultimately enhance the quality of scientific publications from UNUJA.
The training featured Dr. Mahsun, M.Pd., an expert in qualitative research from Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University Malang, as the main speaker. He is known for his in-depth expertise in using NVivo and VOSviewer for qualitative data analysis and visualization. In his session, Dr. Mahsun guided participants through the important stages of managing qualitative data, from the coding process to the categorization of complex data using NVivo. He also taught how to visualize the relationships between concepts and categories of data using VOSviewer, a tool increasingly relied upon by researchers to map relationships between variables more clearly.
Dr. Mahsun stated, “The use of this software not only helps accelerate data analysis but also strengthens the validity of research findings. With the ability to visualize the data produced, researchers can present their results in a more scientific and informative manner.”
Moreover, the participants, consisting of lecturers and postgraduate students, reported gaining many new insights during this training. They learned how to utilize the advanced features offered by NVivo to analyze qualitative data more efficiently, especially in terms of grouping complex data. Additionally, VOSviewer helped them visualize qualitative research data into a more understandable network, thus facilitating the identification of specific patterns in their research.
One participant, who is a lecturer from the postgraduate program, expressed, “This training truly opened our eyes to new ways of conducting qualitative data analysis. With NVivo, we can group data that was previously difficult to manage manually, and with VOSviewer, we can visualize our analysis results in a more attractive and scientific manner.”
The training held today not only enhances the participants' competencies in qualitative research but also strengthens UNUJA's position as an educational institution that continuously strives to improve the quality of research in the digital age. With this training, it is hoped that UNUJA lecturers and students can produce high-quality research that benefits the development of knowledge and society at large.
